"Старый Иеррах лежал в своем уютном сухом углублении меж скал. Полуденнное солнце жарко пекло верхушки камней, но в их тени было просто тепло и хорошо. Как дома. Как во сне... Сон... Даже не сон, тяжелая дремота овладевала им... Где-то там, за камнями, воздух был пронизан солнечным светом и жаром. Солнце казалось было воплощением той единственной вещи в мире, существование которой давало ему смысл жить. Его Сокровище, его Счастье, Символ его угасающего рода. Он был последним ее хранителем. Что будет после его смерти он не знал, да это и не интересовало его. Его мир с ним, когда он уйдет... останется ли мир или исчезнет... Кто знает? Дремота... Тишина...
Внезапно что-то скользнуло по его чушуйчатому боку. Скрежетнули камни и какая-то тень мелькнула в воздухе. Было как-то непривычно темно. Солнце садилось, но было что-то еще. Точнее его не было... Не было Его! Упругое тело начало сворачиваься кольцами, сплющенная голова метнулась вверх. Вот!!! За дальним барханом мелькнул тонкий силует в ареоле трепещущих полупрозрачных крыльев... ..."
